Raising awareness of ADPKD and raising funds for nephrology in the Canary Islands

What is this all about?

Eddie Marsh is an English expat who has been living on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for the past 10 years. On the 4th of April 2017 he was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant from a live donor, his Brother-in-Law Mark Laurie.

It was on that fateful day that Sidney the Kidney was born!

Now, Eddie and his family and friends are raising funds to say a massive thank you to the incredible medical professionals of the Canary Islands who have looked after him as his kidneys slowly deteriorated and are continuing to look after him and monitor him now. Not to mention raising some awareness of ADPKD along the way!

How did we get here?

Eddie was born with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a frankly disgusting disease that affects approximately 1 or 2 people in every 1000 people worldwide.

The condition causes disruption to normal cell growth in the kidneys and leaves fluid-filled sacs in their place. These can vary in size, quantity and distribution, and affect all sufferers differently.

Long-term the cysts interfere with kidney function which begins to have a number of knock-on effects for general bodily function, again, this varies between each sufferer and for those worst affected, there are typically two options: receive a kidney donation, or go on dialysis.

Eddie was incredibly fortunate to not only find a matching donor, but a living one at that.Significantly improving his likelihood of accepting the donor kidney and offering the best possible chance of a better future standard of living.

What do we want to do?

Simply put, there is no way to put into words the truly heroic and selfless act that Mark undertook, most people are shy when it comes to parting ways with a fiver, let alone a vital organ.

We can however try to show some of our immense gratitude towards the incredible staff of the nephrology departments at both Arrecife General Hospital (Lanzarote) and the HUC Hospital (Tenerife) and as such are going to be raising funds over the next few months to not only say a massive thank you, but also to do a little something for those who are living with ADPKD or any form of kidney problem/disease.
